How to Choose the Best High-Quality Towels
Whether you're sourcing towels for a hotel, spa, gym or retail store, choosing the right towel makes all the difference. Many towels look the same in a photo or on the shelf, but the real quality shows after 20 or 30 washes. A good towel stays soft, absorbent and the same size. A poor one turns rough, sheds lint and loses its shape.
As a cotton towel manufacturer in Faisalabad, Pakistan, we check the same five things in every towel we make: fabric, cotton processing, yarn count, GSM, and dyeing and finishing. Here is what each one means and what to ask your supplier.
1. Start With the Fabric: Yarn Quality Matters Most
The foundation of every high-quality towel is the yarn. Always check the fiber content on the label or the supplier's specification sheet:
100% cotton: the best choice for absorbent bath towels. Cotton pulls moisture away from the skin, feels soft and breathable, and handles hot washing. It is the standard for hotels, spas and premium retail.
80/20 cotton-polyester blend: combines cotton's absorbency with polyester's strength. These towels dry faster and resist tearing, so they suit high-turnover use such as gym towels, salons and budget hotel ranges.
100% polyester or microfiber: light and quick-drying, but it does not absorb or feel as plush as cotton. It works for sports and travel towels, not for luxury bath towels.
Bamboo blends: very soft, with a silky feel. Bamboo fiber is usually blended with cotton to give the towel strength and structure.
Tip for buyers: ask for the exact fiber content in writing, for example "100% cotton" or "80% cotton, 20% polyester". Vague terms like "cotton-rich" or "cotton feel" usually mean a lower cotton content.
2. Carded vs. Combed Cotton: Know the Difference in Softness
Even when a towel says "100% cotton", the way the cotton is processed makes a big difference to how it feels and how long it lasts:
Combed cotton: after carding, the cotton is combed to remove short fibers and line up the long ones. The yarn is smoother, stronger and sheds far less lint, and the towel stays soft wash after wash. Combed cotton is the standard for luxury hotel towels and spa towels.
Carded cotton: the fibers are cleaned and untangled but not combed, so some short fibers stay in the yarn. Carded towels are soft and good value for everyday use, but they shed more lint at first and wear out sooner than combed cotton.
Which should you choose? Choose combed cotton for 4- and 5-star hotels, spas and premium retail. Carded cotton is a sensible, cost-effective choice for hospitals, gyms, institutions and budget ranges where towels are replaced more often.

3. Yarn Count Explained: 16s, 20s and 20/2
Yarn count tells you how thick the yarn in the towel's loops is. Cotton towel yarn uses the English count system (Ne), where a lower number means a thicker yarn. So 16s yarn is thicker than 20s yarn. These are the counts you will see most often in towel specifications:
16s and 20s single yarn: one thick strand per loop. Single yarn makes fluffy, soft loops that feel plush from the very first use. It is popular for bath towels, retail towels and spa towels where softness comes first.
20/2 double (two-ply) yarn: two 20s yarns twisted together into one stronger yarn. Ply yarn makes denser, tougher loops that resist pulling and hold their shape through many more industrial washes. It is the better choice for hotels and other commercial laundries.
Tip for buyers: two towels can have the same GSM but feel completely different because of the yarn. Always ask your supplier for the yarn count and whether it is single or ply yarn, not just the weight.
4. GSM: The Key to Towel Thickness and Absorbency
GSM means grams per square meter. It measures how heavy and dense a towel is. A higher GSM towel is thicker and holds more water, but it also takes longer to dry and costs more to wash. The right GSM depends on how the towel will be used:
300 to 400 GSM, lightweight: dries very fast. Best for gym towels, travel towels and kitchen towels.
400 to 500 GSM, medium: a good balance of absorbency and drying time for hospitals, institutions and everyday hand towels.
450 to 550 GSM, standard bath weight: fluffy and absorbent, but still quick to dry. The best choice for home bath towels, standard hotels and serviced apartments.
600 GSM and above, luxury: thick, heavy and very plush. Used by 5-star hotels, resorts and spas.
Higher GSM is not always better. A 650 GSM towel in a busy hotel laundry costs more to wash and dry than a 500 GSM towel. Choose the weight that matches the use, not the highest number. To check the GSM of a towel yourself, see our towel GSM calculator and guide.

5. Safe Dyeing and Skin-Friendly Finishing
A soft towel is not much use if its color fades after a few washes or its dyes are not safe against the skin. Dyeing and finishing decide how a towel looks, feels and performs long after the first wash. Here is what to look for:
OEKO-TEX certified towels: the finished towel, including its dyes and finishes, has been tested for harmful substances. It is the simplest way for a buyer to confirm that a towel is safe for everyday skin contact.
Azo-free dyes: some azo dyes can release harmful chemicals called aromatic amines, and they are restricted in the EU and many other markets. Azo-free dyes avoid that risk and help your towels pass import testing.
Good colorfastness: quality reactive dyes bond with the cotton fiber, so colors stay bright and do not bleed onto other laundry. Ask your supplier for colorfastness results, especially for dyed towels in dark or strong shades.
Absorbent softening: a professional softening wash keeps towels supple and stops that stiff, scratchy feel after drying. Ask for a hydrophilic (water-loving) softener, because some cheap softeners make towels feel soft in the shop but stop them absorbing water.
Tip for buyers: wash one sample towel three times before you place a bulk order. Check that the color holds, the towel does not shrink much, and it still absorbs water quickly. A good towel passes all three tests.

Quick Towel Quality Checklist Before You Buy
Use this checklist when you compare suppliers online or check a manufacturer's sample:
Read the label: look for 100% combed cotton for premium towels, or a clearly stated 80/20 cotton-polyester blend for heavy-use towels.
Check the weight: match the GSM to the use. 450 to 550 GSM suits most bath towels and standard hotels, and 600 GSM and above is for luxury hotels and spas.
Inspect the loops: part the loops with your fingers. If you can easily see the base fabric underneath, the pile is thin. Premium towels have dense, even, upright loops.
Do a water test: drop a little water on the towel. A good cotton towel soaks it up in a few seconds. If the water sits on top, the towel may have too much softener.
Smell the towel: a quality towel has no chemical or sour smell.
Examine the edges: double-turned, lock-stitched hems and strong side borders stop fraying and make the towel last longer.
Ask for certificates: check that the towels are OEKO-TEX certified and made with azo-free dyes.
