Why multiply by 10000?
Because 1 square meter = 100 cm × 100 cm = 10000 square cm. We’re converting the towel’s area to square meters.

Example: 70×140 cm towel
Let’s say your towel weighs 500 grams.

  1. Area = 70 × 140 = 9800 sq cm

  2. GSM = (500 × 10000) / 9800 = 5,000,000 / 9800 = 510.2 GSM

Note: You mentioned 490 GSM for 500g. That actually works out if the weight is ∼480g. At 480g: (480 × 10000) / 9800 = 489.8 GSM, rounded to 490. Always weigh your towel dry for accuracy.
